One thing that is agreed upon is that late term abortions are relatively rare. For example, the most recent statistics indicated that 6.2% of all abortions were conducted from 13 to 15 weeks, 4.2% from 16 to 20 weeks, and 1.4% at or after 21 weeks. And, in 1997, it was estimated that the number of abortions in the U.S. past 24 weeks was 1,032 per year.
In 1987, the Alan Guttmacher Institute asked 420 women who had abortions after 16 weeks why they had not obtained an abortion earlier. The results were as follows:
71% Woman didn’t recognize she was pregnant or misjudged gestation
48% Woman found it hard to make arrangements for abortion
33% Woman was afraid to tell her partner or parents
24% Woman took time to decide to have an abortion
8% Woman waited for her relationship to change
8% Someone pressured woman not to have abortion
6% Something changed after woman became pregnant
6% Woman didn’t know timing is important
5% Woman didn’t know she could get an abortion
2% A fetal problem was diagnosed late in pregnancy
11% Other
Generally speaking, in the United States a woman can receive an abortion up to 24 weeks with not much difficulty (once she finds the abortion doctor). Of course, abortion providers would prefer that women obtain abortions earlier rather than later as the later abortions are more difficult emotionally for the woman and more complicated for the abortion doctor.
As for post-viability abortions, there are only a handful of abortion doctors who will perform this surgery. To obtain a list of those physicians, consult www.abortion.com

The late abortion was because the baby had a chemical disorder that it would not survive after birth. The late abortion was notvnearly as difficult as I thought it would be.

Well, Debbie, that’s putting it bluntly. I assume that I tried to engage you in a civil dialogue, you would do so?
February 28, 2011 at 6:45 am
I agree and the answer is yes.
Pat do you support the right to a late abortion at 28 weeks without medical reasons?
March 2, 2011 at 8:50 am
No I dont, Lillian. I personally believe you should be able to get an abortion that late only if the woman’s life was endangered, it it was a result of rape or incest, if the woman’s health was severely in danger and if there was a fetal abnormality. Bottom line is after 24-25 weeks you should not be able to walk into a clinic no questions asked and have an abortion. What do you think about my reasons for letting her have the abortion?
January 26, 2012 at 8:34 pm
You people sicken me…
January 27, 2012 at 10:23 am
I am sorry, Jen, that you feel that way. I’d love to understand where you are coming from on this issue. It’s a very difficult issue, but having worked with clinics and the women who visit them for so many years, I have some insight into what is going on. Maybe if you gave me a little more of your thoughts, we could have a civil conversation. My goal would not be to try to convert you, but maybe you might understand more about this tough situation. And I might learn from you….
