Medical Abortion

Medical Abortion

The term “medical abortion” is another name for “the abortion pill.”   In some ways, however, it is a misnomer in that a surgical abortion is a “medical” procedure as well.

Medical abortion has been available in the United States for over a decade.  Like surgical abortions, it is a safe option that many women consider each year.

Medical abortion is commonly known by several other names:  The abortion pill, RU 486, Mifepristone, Mifeprex and non-surgical abortion.

Medical abortion is actually a combination of two medications, mifepristone and misoprostol.   It is safe and effective when used within nine weeks of pregnancy.  Your doctor will explain to you how medical abortions works in more detail but generally when you take the mifepristone it blocks the hormone progesterone levels that are needed to maintain a successful pregnancy.  Due to the blockage of this hormone, the uterine lining begins to shed, the cervix is softened and bleeding (an indication of abortion) may occur.  The bleeding may be light much like spotting towards the end of a menstrual period or heavy. In some cases, you may experience no bleeding until you take the second pill, which is the misoprostol.  Misoprostol will be taken orally or inserted vaginally within 48 hours of taking the mifepristone. It causes uterine contractions (cramps) and expels the uterine contents from the body.

Medical abortions are not recommended if you have certain medical conditions such as heart disease, asthma, diabetes, bleeding problems or hypertension or if you use an intra-uterine device.  It is ineffective in the case of ectopic pregnancy.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has found that 95 women out of every 100 have aborted successfully via a medical abortion in the first nine weeks of pregnancy.  Moreover, with medical abortions, the risk of infection is very low and maternal death is virtually non-existent.

Medical abortions are provided through a doctor’s office or clinic.  Many women choose it to avoid surgery. Others feel that a medical abortion is more private because they can end their pregnancy at home. Some feel that it is more natural than a surgical abortion.  In addition, you must be able to commit to two or more visits to the clinic.

Could you email me with some hints & tips about how you made your blog look this awesome , I would be thankful.

    1. Pat Richards Says:

That’s very nice of you, Houston. Honestly, I did not create it myself. It was done by a company I associate with. But yours is a general question, maybe you can be more specific and I could get answers for you. As for me, however, the key is keep it simple. So many blogs, websites get all puffed up and throw in way too much stuff, makes it look trashy…

This one of my favorite blogs.

    Medical abortion is so necessary.

It is crime that it took so long to get medical abortion legalized in America.

    1. Pat Richards Says:

Thanks! It did take a ridiculously long time. Of course, the pill is not the be all and end all, but it’s a good option for some women

  6. Shelly Says:

Can I just use the Misoprostol to do a medical abortion?

    1. Pat Richards Says:

Shelly: In the US, misoprostol has been approved by the FDA only for the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcers. However, clinicians routinely use misoprostol off-label for obstetric and gynecological purposes, including cervical ripening, labor induction, and mid-trimester terminations. Further, the FDA has approved the use of misoprostol in conjunction with mifepristone for the termination of early pregnancies.

Misoprostol-only regimens are not widely used in the US, where mifepristone and misoprostol, methotrexate and misoprostol, and aspiration abortion services are available. However, the off-label use of misoprostol as a single agent abortifacient has been documented, particularly among Latinas in the US.

the simple answer: Find a clinic close to you on http://www.abortion.com and they will counsel you – and good luck!
