MEDICATION GUIDE
Mifeprex® (MIF-eh-prex)
(mifepristone)
Mifeprex abortions have been available in the United States for over a decade. Â Like surgical abortions, they are a safe option that many women consider each year.
Mifeprex abortions are commonly known by several other names: Â The abortion pill, Mifepristone, non-surgical abortions or medical abortions.
A Mifeprex abortion is actually a combination of two medications, mifepristone and misoprostol. Â It is safe and effective when used within nine weeks of pregnancy. Â Your doctor will explain to you how the Mifeprex abortion works in more detail but generally when you take the mifepristone it blocks the hormone progesterone levels that are needed to maintain a successful pregnancy. Â Due to the blockage of this hormone, the uterine lining begins to shed, the cervix is softened and bleeding (an indication of abortion) may occur. Â The bleeding may be light much like spotting towards the end of a menstrual period or heavy. In some cases, you may experience no bleeding until you take the second pill, which is the misoprostol. Â Misoprostol will be taken orally or inserted vaginally within 48 hours of taking the mifepristone. It causes uterine contractions (cramps) and expels the uterine contents from the body.
Mifeprex abortions are not recommended if you have certain medical conditions such as heart disease, asthma, diabetes, bleeding problems or hypertension or if you use an intra-uterine device. It is ineffective in the case of ectopic pregnancy.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has found that 95 women out of every 100 have aborted successfully with the Mifeprex abortion if taken within the first nine weeks of pregnancy. Â Moreover, with the Mifeprex abortion, the risk of infection is very low and maternal death is virtually non-existent.
Mifeprex abortions are provided through a doctor’s office or clinic.  Many women choose it to avoid surgery. Others feel that using the Mifeprex abortion is more private because they can end their pregnancy at home. Some feel that it is more natural than a surgical abortion.  In addition, you must be able to commit to two or more visits to the clinic.

Ellie: the answer is yes. The abortion pill is another option for women who are seeking to terminate their pregnancy. You should talk to tghe doctor about whether or not it is a good option for you.

It all depends on your preference. With the pill, it is a several day event. With a surgical, you are in on the one day and out in a few hours. But then, it is surgery – versus taking a few pills.

Before any abortion, a woman needs to have an ultrasound and see a picture of the fetus. I aborted a 12-week old fetus twenty-nine years ago and have lived with regret and depression ever since. Five years ago my niece showed me the ultrasound snapshot of her 12-week old fetus. If I had seen the snapshot of my child prior to aborting, I would not have followed through. A fetus is a developing child and not simply a mass. It is a child! Please give major consideration before following through. The decision you make now can haunt you for the rest of your life!
