Everyone is in an understandable panic with the election of Donald Trump. And they have every right to be concerned. All of the liberal groups are hunkering down for the fights to come. They’re gonna win some of those fights but lose most of them.
The irony, of course, is that those same groups are going to make a crap load of money.
The other day I was talking to a friend of mine with the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League. She said that “the money is pouring in” to their coffers and they’re looking at hiring more staff. Let’s face it – people are usually motivated to donate money out of fear. And even though I don’t believe Roe v Wade will be overturned in the next ten or twenty years, those direct mail pieces are certainly scaring the crap out of people. “Send money today so we can preserve abortion rights!” Planned Parenthood is also raking it in.
I actually witnessed this phenomenon in the early 1980’s. I was the chief lobbyist for the National Abortion Rights Action League (why they added “and Reproductive” is beyond me) and for years there was a serious effort to pass the Hatch Constitutional Amendment which would have reversed Roe v Wade. This was a REAL danger so we were raising millions and millions of dollars. A lot of that money was used to hire more accountants!
Then, the vote came in the Senate and we whipped their ass by a large margin. The antis didn’t even get a majority to vote for the amendment. That night we had a great celebration which carried into the next day. Then the day after that, we met with our direct mail consultants and it was the most depressing meeting I’ve ever been to. They told us the “gravy train” was stopping, that now that we had won, the money was going to stop. Within a month, we were laying off half the staff.
So, for the reproductive rights groups, there’s some “good” news and probably more bad news.
